Orangutan Foundation International Canada (OFIC)
We are a nonprofit organization committed to the preservation of wild orangutans within their rainforest habitat. This organization was established in 2011 by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and associates in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Tax-deductible charity status was granted by the Canadian government in March 2012. With the creation of Orangutan Foundation International Canada, Canadians can directly support the orangutan conservation and forest protection work of Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and her colleagues in Indonesia.
Current board members consist of Dr. Galdikas’ former students as well as committed Canadian volunteers, donors, and researchers, coming together to establish a sister organization to Orangutan Foundation International. Our goals are to raise awareness concerning the orangutans’ dire situation in the wild and to gather support for orangutan conservation and habitat protection from a broader range of Canadians.
OFIC provides support to the Orangutan Care Centre & Quarantine (OCCQ) facility established by Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas and OFIC sister organization OFI in Pasir Panjang, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. The OCCQ provides care for 330 displaced orangutans. We support both the care of these displaced individuals at the OCCQ, as well as their eventual release into suitable protected forests.
