Protecting Forests For The Future
“You can’t protect orangutans without protecting the forest” – Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas
Orangutans are found only in the rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Over the last 20 years, they have lost 80% of their habitat and more than 50% of the original population has been lost. Orangutans could be extinct in the next 50 years, but you can help prevent that.
The Forest Protection Program is integral to our plan to help save orangutans and their rainforest home. We work with the local government to create protected areas and corridors to connect orangutan habitats. We operate patrols and posts to keep a presence on the land, as even protected land is always at risk from illegal logging. We help prevent and fight fires to save the forest and also rewild and reforest areas already degraded, logged, or burned. When possible we help purchase land or stewardship rights of local forest for immediate protection, which also prevents palm oil companies from being able to buy it 😈.
